A little rabbit is picking mushrooms in a forest. A wolf is ing. He is very hungry. “Oh， a little rabbit! This is my favourite food!”

One day an old man is selling a big elephant. A young man es to the elephant and begins to look at it slowly. The old man goes up to him and says in his ear，

“Don’t say anything about the elephant before I sell it; then I will give you some meat.”

“All right.” says the young man.
“好的。”那位年轻人说。
After the old man sells the elephant， he gives the young man some meat and says， “How can you see the bad ears of the elephant?”
老人卖出大象之后，他给了年轻人一些肉然后说，“你是怎样看到大象的坏耳朵的?”
“I didn’t see the bad ears，” says the young man.
“我没有看到坏耳朵，”年轻人说。
“Then why do you look at the elephant slowly?” asks the old man.

The young man answers， “Because I have never seen an elephant before， and I want to know what it looks like.”

a man was going to the house of some rich person. as he went along the road， he saw a box of good apples at the side of the road. he said， "i do not want to eat those apples; for the rich man will give me much food; he will give me very nice food to eat." then he took the apples and threw them away into the dust.
he went on and came to a river. the river had bee very big; so he could not go over it. he waited for some time; then he said， "i cannot go to the rich man‘s house today， for i cannot get over the river."
he began to go home. he had eaten no food that day. he began to want food. he came to the apples， and he was glad to take them out of the dust and eat them.
do not throw good things away; you may be glad to have them at some other time.

A Woodman came into a forest to ask the Trees to give him a handle for Ax. It seemed so modest a request that the principal tree at once agreed to it， and it was settled among them that the plain， homely Ash should furnish what was wanted.
No sooner had the Woodman fitted the staff to his purpose ，then he began laying about him on all side.Felling the whole matter too late， whispered to the Cedar: "the first concession has lost all ;if we has not a sacrificed our humble neighbor， we might have yet stood for ages ourselves."
有一个樵夫来到森林里，要求树给他一跟斧柄，看来他的请求十分谦虚，立刻得到了树的首领的同意。他们决定由普通而朴素的白杨树来供给所需要的东西。
樵夫刚按好斧柄，就开始到处乱砍，森林里的树都砍倒了，树林此刻察觉大势已去，就小声对衫树说："第一次的让步已失去了一切，如果我们不牺牲我们的小小的邻居，我们自我还能够活无数年呢。"

Kua Fu tried his best to chase the sun. When he arrived at the place where the sun set， he had to turned around， as he could not bear the thirst， and came to the Yellow River and the Wei River.
夸父竭尽全力追赶阳光。当他追赶阳光降落的地方时， 由于忍受不了干渴，只好掉转头，回到黄河、渭河所在的地方，一口气便将这两条河里的水喝得精光。
In one breath， he quaffed up all the water in both rivers. Though he drank up two rivers， he still felt thirsty， and he decided to go to the large lake in the north for a good drink. On the way to the north， Kua Fu eventually died of thirst。
虽然喝光了两条大河，但夸父还是感到不解渴，又打算到北方的大湖里去痛饮一番。北去的途中，夸父终因干渴而死。
The walking stick thrown down by him， being nurtured by the nourishment converted from his dead body， unexpectedly bloomed and fructified， and it grew into peach woods， which stretched for thousands of miles.
扔下的手杖，被他的尸体所化成的养料滋润，竟然开花结果，长成一片连绵千里的桃林。

During the Eastern Jin Dynasty， there was an old fisherman in Wuling. One day， he took his boat out to go fishing. As the boat floated downstream， the fisherman lost his way. Suddenly， a beautiful forest of peach trees with flowers in full bloom caught his eyes. He carried on sailing to the end of the forest where he found a mountain with a small cave at its foot. After the fisherman walked through the cave， a new world opened up before him. The people seemed happy and gentle， and lived peaceful lives with no arguments or disputes. The old rested quietly while the young played happily.
东晋年间，武陵有一个老渔夫。一天，他驾着渔船出去打鱼。船沿着溪水行驶，老渔夫不知怎样迷了路。忽然，一片美丽的桃花林出此刻他眼前。渔夫觉得很奇怪，继续往前寻找桃花林的尽头。树林的尽头是一座山，山脚下有个小洞。渔夫穿过了山洞，竟然看到了另外一个世界。
Unlike the world outside the cave， there was no conflict or turbulence. When they saw the fisherman， the people asked him not to tell others what he had seen there.
那里的人们过着快乐安宁的生活，大家和睦相处，没有纷争，老人们安静地休息，儿童愉快地玩耍，没有外界那样动荡不安。大家看见了老渔夫，嘱咐他不要把在那儿看到的一切告诉别人。
But when he got home the fisherman told the other villagers about his experiences. They did not really believe him but followed him back to the cave out of curiosity. But he never found the place again.

Making His Mark
A man from the state of Chu was taking a boat across a river when he dropped his sword into the water carelessly. Immediately he made a mark on the side of the boat where the sword dropped， hoping to find it later. When the boat stopped moving， he went into the water to search for his sword at the place where he had marked the boat. As we know， the boat had moved but the sword had not. Isnt this a very foolish way to look for a sword?
楚国有个人坐船渡江时，他不细心把自我的一把宝剑掉落江中。他立刻掏出一把小刀，在宝剑落水的船舷上刻上一个记号。船靠岸后，那楚人立即从船上刻记号的地方跳下水去捞取掉落的宝剑。他怎样找得到宝剑呢?船继续行驶，而宝剑却不会再移动。像他这样去找剑，真是太愚蠢可笑了。
英文小故事（十九）：
One day， Zhuang Gong， King of the State of Qi， went out in a chariot to hunt.
一天，齐庄公乘车外出打猎。
On the way， he saw a small insect raise both its arms， trying to stop the wheels of the chariot. Zhuang Gong of Qi was curious and asked the driver:
路上，他看见一只小虫举起双臂，想阻挡车轮前进。齐庄公很好奇，就问车夫:
"What kind of insect is it?"
“这是什么虫子?”
"It is a mantis，" the driver replied promptly. "This kind of insect only knows how to advance but not retreat， blindly underrating its enemies and overrating its own abilities."
车夫连忙回答:“这是蝗螂。这种虫子只知前进，不知后退，盲目轻敌，不自量力。”
Hearing the driver's reply， Zhuang Gong smiled to himself and remained silent.
听了车夫的回答，庄公暗自发笑，默默无语。
英文小故事（二十）：
A little panda picks up a pumpkin and wants to take it home. But the pumpkin is too big. The panda can’t take it home.
一只小熊猫摘了一只大南瓜，想把它拿回家。可是这只南瓜太大了，她没有办法把这么大的南瓜带回家。
Suddenly she sees a bear riding a bike toward her. She watches the bike. “I know! I have a good idea.” she jumps and shouts happily， “I can roll a pumpkin. It’s like a wheel.”
突然她看见一只狗熊骑着一辆自行车朝她这边来。她看着自行车，跳着说：“有了！我有办法了。我能够把南瓜滚回家去。南瓜好像车轮。
So she rolls the pumpkin to her home. When her mother sees the big pumpkin， she is surprised， “Oh， my God! How can you carry it home?” the little panda answers proudly， “I can’t lift it， but I can roll it.” Her mother smiled and says，“What a clever girl!”
于是她把那瓜滚回家。当她母亲看到这只大南瓜的时候，很惊讶：“天啊！这么食的南瓜！你是怎样把它带回家来的？”小熊猫自豪地说；“我拎不动它，可是我能滚动它啊！”她母亲微笑着说：“真聪明啊！”
英文小故事（二十一）：
Little boy and scorpion son
There is a child in front of city wall to catch the grasshopper， and in a short while caught the lots of。Suddenly see a scorpion son， he to think is also grasshopper，

惊弓之鸟
In the Warring States Period， there was a man in the State of Wei called Geng Lei. One day he said to the king: 'I can shoot down birds by simply plucking my bowstring.' When the king expressed doubt， Geng Lei pointed his bow at a wild goose flying in the sky， twanged the bowstring， and the goose fell to the ground. Geng Lei said， 'This goose has been hurt in the past. Hearing the twang of the bowstring， it assumed that it was doomed. So it simply gave up trying to live.
战国时期（公元前403―221年中国中原地区各诸侯国连年争战的时代）魏国有个名叫更羸的人。一天，他对国王说：“我只要拉开弓，空射一下，就能把天上的鸟射下来。”国王不相信。更羸便对准天上飞来的一只雁射去，果真那只雁听到拉弦的声音就掉了下来。国王感到很奇怪。更羸说，“那是一只受过伤的雁。它一听到我拉开弓弦的声响，就惊慌得支持不住，天然要掉下来了。”
This idiom means that if one has been frightened in the past one's will may bee paralysed in a similar situation.
“惊弓之鸟”这个成语比喻受过惊恐之后，有一点动静就异常害怕。

Once there were three foxes， they worked together. They lived a happy life.
从前有三只狐狸，他们愉快地工作和居住在一齐。
Little by little， the youngest fox became lazy， and often quarreled with the other foxes. The eldest had to leave， and the second fox was driven off， too.
渐渐地，最小的狐狸变得又懒又坏，经常同其他的两只狐狸争吵，气走了它的大哥和二哥。

He first played the "Exercise of Qing Jiao"， but the cow still kept on eating grass with head lowered. He seemed to realize that the melody was too highbrow for the cow to understand.

So he played several other melodies， imitating the buzzing sounds of swarms of flying mosquitoes， and the bleats of a calf looking for its panions. At this， to his surprise， the cow stopped eating grass， but raised its head， pricked up its ears， wagged its tail and， pacing up and down in small steps， began to listen attentively.

Once a man wanted to go to the south， but his carriage was heading north. A passer-by asked him: “If you are going to the south， why is your chariot heading north? ” The man answered， “My horse is good at running， my driver is highly skilled at driving a carriage， and I have enough money. ” The man didn't consider that the direction might be wrong; the better his conditions were， the further he was away from his destination.
从前有个人要到南方去，他坐的车子却向北方行驶。过路人说：“你去南方，车子怎样向北行驶呢？”他回答说：“我的马很能跑路，我的车夫驾车的技术也很高明，加上我又带了充足的路费。”这个人没有研究到，方向弄反了，他的条件越好，离他要去的地方就越远。
The idiom derived from this story indicates that one's action was the opposite effect to one's intention.
之后人们就把这个故事概括为“南辕北辙”，比喻一个人的行为和他的目的正好相反。
